Leica store in store to be opened in West Palm Beach (updated)

Update: The upcoming Leica store in West Palm Beach is not own by Leica but by the Palm Beach Photographic Centre. Similar shops already exist in NYC (Photo Village) and in Monterey (Camera West). Here is the official press release for more details.

Leica already did open a store in Moscow and another one is scheduled to be opened in London. The first Leica store in the US will be located in West Palm Beach, Florida. I had the opportunity to visit the location and here is my report.

The new Leica store will be part of the new Palm Beach Photographic Centre (http://www.workshop.org), located on the trendy Clematis street in downtown West Palm Beach. The Centre is just over 26,000 net sq. ft. of classrooms, museum, studio, store and administration and occupies two stories of a brand new building (still under construction). The emphasis will on digital photography and there are no plans for a dark room. The general photography store (http://proshopforphotographers.com) is going to be 3,000 sq. ft., which will include the Leica Store in Store (SIS). The opening is expected to be in approximately 6 weeks. My understanding is that Leica is planing to open more stores in the US and across the world. This seems to be the latest marketing trend to promote a brand – even Microsoft decided to open their own stores after the success of Apple. Are we going back to the good old “brick and mortar” solution?

Here is the rendering of the new Leica SIS in West Palm Beach. The custom made furniture is currently in transit and should be installed in the ProShop either the first or second week of October.

Will a full frame sensor fit in a M8 body?

An interesting experiment at the l-camera-forum (registration required): a forum member created a dummy full frame sensor and inserted it in a M8 body. The result: “clear vignetting left and right and in the corners” and “doesn’t appear possible to fit an FF sensor in the current body with the current battery”. Hit the link or full details and pictures.

Leica M9 will not be the only announcement on September 9th

?

A very reliable source from France confirmed that there will be a Leica M9 on September 9th (18MP, full frame, not a Canon sensor). I can say that now I am 99% sure about that announcement. The best part is that there will be also another camera announced on that day that “would be very interesting”. Remember what Stefan Daniel said: “there will be no R10 from Leica, but there will be a good solution that allows us to use our R-lenses on a digital body“. So, what is this new camera going to be? Will it take R-lenses? Leca clearly said that they will stay away from m4/3, so that’s out of the question. I will try to gather some more information.

Leica M9 again

M9

I received another Leica M9 tip this time from Belgium: it seems that certain stores there were able to pre-order their shipments of Leica M9. The official date mentioned was again September 9th (09.09.09), the sensor will be 18.something MP and the price will be EUR 5,499 street price (around USD 7,800).

This information matches previous Leica M9 rumors (except the Canon sensor – I guess the sensor will be from Kodak).

Good deal (Leica eBay madness)

Update: this eBay listing may be a scam – the picture is the same as the Leica in the auction in Vienna (thanks for the tip Oliver).

Few months ago, at WestLicht Photographica Auction in Vienna, a Leica M4 Olive (Bundeswehr edition) camera sold for EUR 87,600 (USD 124,000).

Today, a similar camera just sold on eBay for USD20,0000. Somebody got a good deal 🙂

It seems that this Leica collection is still not sold for USD 35,000 (was already listed on eBay few months ago):
