Leica to launch a new compact mirrorless system camera at Photokina 2012

In an interview with BJP and AP, Leica’s chairman Dr. Andreas Kaufmann and CEO Alfred Schopf confirmed that they will be announcing a new compact mirrorless system camera (EVIL) at Photokina 2012, something I have been reporting here on LeicaRumors for a while. Some quotes:

“It’s more than an idea, you will see something at the next Photokina. The new system will use an “APS-C sized sensor at least”  [Alfred Schopf]

“We will always do things differently and we always take our time.” [Andreas Kaufmann]

The new camera system is expected to be different from the current offerings from other manufacturers. It seems that Leica has decided on an EVF, but this will depend on the type of sensor they will choose. Expect the new camera to be compatible with Leica R lenses.

Leica M9-P now official

The new Leica M9-P will cost $7995.00 and will start shipping in July, 2011. Black (010-703) and chrome (010-716) versions will be available. The new features are:

  • Display cover glass made of Sapphire
  • Vulcanite leatherette with either a black paint top cover or a silver chrome top cover
  • Pure Leica look without Leica logo and M9 lettering on the front side
  • Classical “Leica” engraving on the top cover

There will be also a new silver chrome handgrip for M8.2, M9 and M9-P (catalog # 014-487) with a price tag of $300.

Leica Super Elmar M 21mm f/3.4 ASPH lens now official

Today Leica announced the new Super Elmar M 21mm f/3.4 ASPH lens (catalog# 011-145). The price is $2995 and is expected to start shipping in July 2011. The main features are:

  • Wide angle view for architecture, street and landscape photography.
  • Excellent image quality at full aperture. Distortion, vignetting and chromatic aberration have been reduced to a minimum.
  • Convenient to carry because of its compact size.
  • Flare resistant design allows for images under extreme backlight conditions.
  • The f/3.4 lens speed in combination with the short focal length allows sharp images even in available light situations.
  • Metal lens hood is included in the scope of delivery.
  • Can be used not only with digital M-cameras but with all Leica analog M-cameras since 1954
  • Made in Germany.
