Photokina rumor: Leica will be releasing a new lower price rangefinder, an R10, and the new D Lux-4

“I was told by a very reliable source. Leica wants to expand it’s sales in their camera and lens divisions. Making an RF camera that is affordable, ($1000 – $2,000) and lenses that are more affordable, which they are doing currently, should get more people using the RF format. This camera will be announced and shown at Photokina, along with the new R10, and the Dlux-4, in a kit form (including a telephoto add-on lens). It makes good marketing sense. Also, they are going to drop the 4/3 system, leaving Olympus to their Zuiko lenses, and continue their association with Panasonic. My source is solid, I’m not a troll. I guess we’ll know next month, for sure.”

– Leica will introduce a FF R10 and a new corresponding AF -lens line as prototype. Production will start late 2009.
– There will not be a new Leica FT model – but Leica will continue together with Panasonic the FTs line ( – think whatever you believe imho it is an Ausstieg¹ )
– FoMag is waiting for a new “Leica-Knaller” (Big Leica-Bang) which will be introduced at Sept. 15th in a press conference. FoMag will publish the news on a separate FoMag internet page.

Don’t judge a book by its cover

We just launched this bog and already received few skeptical emails about this site, which is fine – we like constructive criticism (we got some encouraging messages too). Rumors sites cannot deliver new rumors every day starting with the first post. Like everything else it will take time to analyze our sources and start collecting some credible information. You will be surprised of the amount and quality of information we are now receiving at NikonRumors. Over time ,we will be able to accomplish the same results here. Yes, we did report on some old Leica rumors, but we have some catching up to do.

Someone mentioned that we are just following the news already reported on other sites. This is partially true, but in NikonRumos we were the first one to deliver on many rumors and most of them turned out to be true – the latest picture of Nikon D90 is a good example (of course we still do not know if it is the real deal). We do believe we were the first one to publish it. Of course many other sites picked on it, but if you look at the time stamps and follow the source links, they all go back to NR. Remember the Nikon D700? Just over a month ago very few readers believed this story and now photographers are already shooting with it.

Why we are saying all this? Just one reason/request: please be patient, don’t judge a book by its cover and give us some time.

Of course this will not be a rumor site without some faked photoshoped image, or maybe not?

Leica Rumor: new lower price rangefinder, an R10, and the new D Lux-4.

From the daily rumor scan of dpreview:

Leica will be releasing a new, lower price rangefinder, an R10, and the new D Lux-4.
I was told by a very reliable source. It makes good marketing sense. and one more:

Adorama predictions for Photokina – Leica will drop out of 4/3 + new FF R-series Leica DSLR

3. Meet the Interchangeable-Lens EVF Camera: This will happen, and it will be based on the just-announced Micro Four Thirds system. Without bulky mirror boxes that distinguished DSLRs, cameras can be made smaller, but an Electronic Viewfinder is easier to use in bright light than a simple LCD. The participating companies–Panasonic and Olympus (and notably, no longer Leica) have promised a new line of lenses for these cameras that will be interchangeable, and that’s exciting.

9. Leica will quietly drop out of Four Thirds, Panasonic will quietly drop DSLRs, and HP will quietly drop out. When’s the last time you saw a new HP camera introduction? Look for them to focus on their core products, printers and scanners. Leica was not included in the Micro Four Thirds announcement%3B that sort of thing can lead to speculation. Panasonic rolled out its newest products last month, and no SLRs were included. They are one of the few compact camera companies that’s doing well with that line. They may have decided to focus on their strength.

10. Something big from Leica, but it won’t be a full-frame rangefinder. It might be a full-frame R-series DSLR, something we haven’t seen yet.

“Leica has sent a letter to its customers informing them that a full-frame M is, indeed, on the way”

Some more old rumors:

However, it has recently been brought to our
attention that Leica has sent a letter to its customers informing them
that a full-frame M is, indeed, on the way. Furthermore, the letter
seems to indicate that the M8 upgrade program, announced at PMA, may
include swapping out the current APS-D sensor with a full-frame, 35mm
sized one.

The upgrade, which will cost 1,200 Euros, officially includes
a more “Leica-like” shutter and feel, as well as quality improvements
to both hardware and firmware. But according to this latest news, M8
owners might be able to take advantage of a future full-frame sensor.
