All you need to know about the new products Leica is rumored to introduce at Photokina

Leica-Das-Wesentliche-event-at-Photokina
First, a quick disclaimer: I have no idea what Leica will announce at Photokina - I have collected the information in this post from previous rumors, leaks and interviews (this is an updated version of this post). Here it is, the big list of rumored/expected Leica products that will be announced at Photokina:

Leica M Edition 60

Leica-M60-limited-edition-camera

Update: The Leica M Edition 60 camera briefly appeared on Leica's website. the camera is designed by Audi.

Many readers do not believe me, but I will stand behind what I reported two years ago: Leica will announce a new digital rangefinder without LCD screen:

"it will be a special limited edition that will have an ISO dial on back instead of a LCD screen. The camera will only capture color uncompressed RAW files and will have the same sensor as in the M 240. The thickness and dimensions will also be similar to the M240. The new camera will be simplified with less dials/buttons and no video recording capabilities. The selling price will be higher than the M 240 ($6,950.00)."

Leica MP silver rangefinder camera
This camera was in the making for a long time - I first reported about it back in 2012. The M60 will most likely be a limited edition run and it will come together with one lens (either the 35mm or 50mm Summilux). A famous designer (or design studio) will be involved in the making of this model. This limited M60 will be made out of a "unique" metal/material - something that Leica has never done before and it will be priced "reasonably" (in Leica terms), which probably means cheaper compared to previous limited editions - for example the Leica M9 Titanium costed $26,500.

New Leica M Monochrom

Like I already reported, the new Leica M Monochrom will not be announced at Photokina, but few weeks/months later (I have no exact date for now).

New Leica M lenses

Here are the possibilites:

Update: new Summarit M lenses:

  • Leica Summarit-M 35 mm f / 2.4 ASPH
  • Leica Summarit-M 50 mm f / 2.4
  • Leica Summarit-M 75 mm f / 2.4
  • Leica Summarit-M 90 mm f / 2.4

Leica X Typ 113 (or Leica X-E)

Leica-X-Type-113-camera
A Leica X2 replacement will definitely be one of the cameras announced at Photokina. The name of the new model will be Leica X Typ 113 or Leica X-E. Expect 16Mp sensor, 2.7" display and the same Elmarit 24mm f/2.8 ASPH lens (all with some minor improvements). There were also some rumors for a new 23mm f/1.7 ASPH lens (low probability).

Leica D-Lux

Leica will also announce a new D-Lux camera. The current Leica D-Lux 6 camera is listed as discontinued at B&H and is out of stock at Adorama. You can expect an EVR, 4k video and Wi-Fi to come with the new version.

Update: see the potential Leica D-Lux specs here.

Leica V-Lux

The upcoming Leica V-Lux Typ 114 camera has leaked several times already. Expect the following features: 25-400mm zoom (35mm equivalent),  4k video, 3" LCD rotatable screen, EVF, Wi-Fi.

Update: the new Leica V-Lux will probably be based on the Panasonic FZ1000 camera.

Other rumored Leica products

Here are few other Leica rumors:

Chrome Nocti. The Photokina janitor better get an extra mop for the drool.

  • jh

Wait, they will remove the LCD, some controls and most of the functions and the size will still be similar to the M240?
Why not approach the size of the old film leicas? Not only that, they will overcharge you to remove all these things. Only leica…

    • NoMeJodas

Leica is the only company I know that managed to move from film to FF digital sensor with only a slight change in dimensions that is barely noticeable in practice, which is more than you can say for Nikon and Canon.

      Leica M dimensions in mm:
      M6/M7 138 x 38 x 79.5
      MP 138 x 38 x 77
      M8/M9 139 x 37 x 80
      M240 139 x 42 x 80

Some like me are waiting for a M9-like body without Bayer-filter and no LCD. And much cheaper.
But Leica does it all wrong : a CMOS-based, color body. And much more expensive than M9???

I will end up buying an third-hand M9, and see if I can assemble it will old M7 body parts.

    • mediokre

Or try to make stuff like this come true… https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/digipod

      • Dirt McGirt

It was sounding like a good plan until he invoked the name of Ken Rockwell. Now I’m sure it’ll never happen.

  • NoMeJodas

I really hope the M60 will become reality. Film shooting experience in a fully digital workflow would be a dream comes true. If done right (i.e. if it doesn’t require you to connect it to some external device for setup) I will consider replacing my M240 with it.

    • NerdBuster

I am going to quote this post of yours in other websites and make fun of you.

      • NoMeJodas

Let me guess: you also made fun of people who wanted a black and white only digital camera. Now the MM is one of the most successful Leicas (according to a Article in a German magazine).

        • A

Except the MM produces higher quality pictures than any Leica digital camera. The “M60” will produce the same images as the M240.

So, while the MM has something over other cameras, the “M60” only has less. And yet Leica intends to charge more…

That said, I might buy one only to speculate on the folly of Leica groupies. I’ll make a nice profit in a couple of years.

          • NoMeJodas

Yes. Now nobody can troll the MM but before it was released you had the same stupid comments from more or less the same usual suspects:

            https://leicarumors.com/2012/03/14/rumor-the-next-leica-m-camera-will-have-a-black-and-white-sensor.aspx/

As to Leica’s pricing, they are free to price their products however they like, and I’m free to decide if a product is worth my hard earned money or not, just like you and everyone else.

And if I’m curious and want to understand someone else’s decision (for example to get a Df that I would never ever want to use), then I ask them politely and they will be happy to share their thoughts with me. I might even learn something new, less so if I started by calling them idiots to begin with.

          • ILoveNerds

I put some black tape on my LCD. You are so smart, I’d never have thought…
Tomorrow, I am going to glue some dials.

        • sperdynamite

I still make fun of MM owners.

          • Dirt McGirt

Why are you here? Just to be a sad little troll dog?

Do you make fun of people who own Shelby Cobras too?

Coming to a site that is dedicated to a camera company you hate just to troll is really pathetic spermydynamite.

          • sperdynamite

Happy troll dog here. Keep buying your man jewelry and watching white glove unboxings. Can’t wait for the Seal special edition Leica.

          • Dirt McGirt

My camera is not jewelry. I don’t watch unboxing videos because they’re idiotic. I hate Seal and I don’t give a crap about what other celebrities use Leica cameras. Don’t lump me in with you’re skewed perception of what a Leica owner is.

I take photographs. My camera is beat to hell because it goes everywhere with me. It has 60,000+ shutter releases (and it doesn’t even shoot 11fps!).

Jealousy is the only reason you’re here. Otherwise you wouldn’t bother to care what other people spend their money on. It’s obvious you want a Leica so bad that you keep coming to a LEICA website trying to belittle those that have what you covet yet cannot afford.

You can come back with another snarky comment, but you know the truth. Now go take some f’n pictures instead of acting like the jealous kid on the interwebs playground.

          • sperdynamite

How can you deny Seal’s kiss from a rose?

          • Dirt McGirt

That’s exactly the response I expected from you. HAHA. You are are a sad turd. Goodbye spermydynamite. Have fun with your sad life.

I love the fact that you couldn’t even come back with a decent response.

          • Anto de Chav

A seal Leica would be a Joke… he is a one hit wonder that is only known for marrying a model..

          • Anto de Chav

I shoot Leica but I had to laugh at this… 😉

    • booh

Flip the LCD of R-D1 over and you realize this “dream” had came true 10 years ago. It even has a film advance lever, which probably would be missing from the M60.

  • Pantechnicon

Any truth in the rumour that the M60 will be bundled with a high quality hair shirt?

  • wow
  • Kynikos

I have no problem with Leica running their business as they see fit.

I have not bought a digital M because the sensor tech seems to lag the field by 3-5 years. 24MP is more than enough, but I’m hoping the next sensor gives me what I need for low light.

It’s time for a company like Zeiss to make a digital M-Mount with the latest (presumably Sony) sensor. Zeiss and Sony already collaborate on stuff, why not this? Make a “cheap” ($4-$5K) digital M-Mount that smokes the Typ 240 on specs and natively uses Leica glass?

    • Simon

Hopefully the rumoured Distagon 35/1.4 signals their intent to return to making ZM lenses and cameras. It was a huge shame when they cancelled the Ikon as it’s a cheaper entry into M lenses for a still decent film body and I think we’d all like to see some similar competition for Leica in digital M cameras too.

    • El Aura

And how would that differ from a Sony A7 with M-mount adaptor?

      • Kynikos

        Duh, no adaptor?

    • booh

It’s been “time” since 2004, when the Zeiss Ikon and the R-D1 were announced, and people realized that Cosina was the hand behind it.

Ten years had passed with tons of monthly, if not weekly suggestions of “it’s time for Cosina/Zeiss/Fuji (huh?)/(even) Philip to pump out an ‘inexpensive/reasonably-priced/cheap’ FF digital rangefinder” appeared on forums like RFF.

Mr. Kobayashi had long promised: it won’t happen. Save your effort, go grab the a7 and be happy.

  • Simon

Sounds like the M60 is merely a collectible rather than a staple of their lineup. Maybe it’ll be limited to 60 pieces!

  • sperdynamite

So if the MA is a true replacement of the MP, then Leica has figured out a way to cut corners on yet another product, and still charge more for it because…red dot…ethos…pure photography blah blah. Bravo, Leica.
