After some more research, the Leica Cinema rumor does not sound so impossible (thanks for the feedback I got from our readers): Leica Cinema GmbH does exists as a legal entity (LLC, created in 2007, located in Zurich, Switzerland) – here is the link.

Crazy, but still a rumor: Leica may be coming out with a line of cinema lenses

I do not know what to think about this rumor. I would say it’s busted right upfront (anonymous email):
At a Leica Day last year in La Jolla, CA, I heard that a large Hollywood studio had bought a copy of each R lens from Leica. They planned to retrofit them for use on motion picture cameras. I’ve heard subsequent rumors that Leica may be coming out with a line of cinema lenses.
Can someone that attended this meeting in La Jolla last year confirm this rumor?

Weekend Leica Forum in Germany – Photokina expectations

This information is is based on a Leica Forum that happened few weeks ago in Germany. The presenter form Leica was Mr. Stefan Daniel who is the head of the M division at Leica in Solms. Here is run down on the report:

R-System:
– no new R lens at Photokina
– R9 still in production
– autofocus may come

M-System:
– many surprises for Photokina advertised
– the name Noctilux will be a part of the future M lens family
– a new fixed wide angle lens will come for Photokina
– the preferred sensor supplier for M will still be Kodak
– Tri Elmar 28-35-50 is no longer in production

Four-Thirds:
– there will be no Leica labeled Olympus E-3

D-Lux, etc.:
– there will be new models in corporation with Panasonic for Photokina.

Leica’s global sales fell 38% because of delays in the introduction of new products

“Leica’s global sales fell 38% for the three months to 30 June compared to the same quarter last year…The strong decline is due to reduced sales of the M-system and of digital compact cameras, resulting from delays in the introduction of new products, states Leica Camera AG in a statement.”

Rumor: Leica considering rebranding Canon DSLRs (updated)

Update: Imaging Insider received an e-mail on Monday, August 18, 2008 from someone that apparently works for Leica confirming this rumor. Here is the updated link.
I would say the chance of this to happened is 1%, but it is still a rumor:
